Esta es una de la canciones que más me gustan de Shakespears Sister, y fue un éxito mediano después del gran hit que tuvieron con “Stay”.

“Hello (Turn Your Radio On)” fue el cuarto single del disco “Hormonally Yours” y fue lanzado en Noviembre de 1992. Solo llegó al puesto 14 en las listas británicas.

Una preciosa balada con una letra igualmente muy buena, con un video dirigido por Sophie Muller que es toda una maravilla artística en blanco y negro.

Me encanta como sale Siobhan Fahey en especial en el video. Siobhan era mi componente de Bananarama preferida y me gustó mucho como llevó su carrera con Shakespears Sister, es una gran artista.

Generalmente la música de Björk se me hace difícil de digerir, pero considero que tiene una colección de videoclips que son un portento, y por eso me apena que no logre conectar totalmente con ella en el aspecto musical. De todas maneras, esto no ocurre con su canción “Army of me”, que es la que más me gusta de ella, y encima el videoclip me parece una obra maestra.

Esta canción se encontraba incluida en su segundo disco, “Post”, y fue lanzada como primer single promocional del mismo, en Abril de 1995. Fue escrita por Björk y Graham Massey en una hora sólo, con producción de Nelle Hooper, Graham Massey y Björk. También fue incluida en la banda sonora de la película “Tank girl”. La canción también formó parte de un proyecto en el 2005, encarnado en un disco titulado “Army of Me-xes”, donde varios artistas versionaban este tema. Los beneficios de este disco fueron destinados a los afectados por el tsunami asiático tan violento que hubo en aquella época.

La canción, es un tema que incluye una instrumentación industrial y varios samples de explosiones. Björk contó que con esta canción, intentaba inclinar la balanza hacia un lado más salvaje después de que su disco anterior, “Debut”, tuviese un carácter más formal. Este tema llegó al puesto 10 en la lista británica.

Pero a lo que vamos, es a tratar el vídeo en especial. Dirigido por el francés Michel Gondry, se utilizaron técnicas como las maquetas, gráficos generados por ordenador y proyección sobre pantallas para lograr los magníficos efectos que tiene.

El vídeo es todo un himno a lo onírico; desde que empieza hasta que acaba, podría perfectamente tratarse de un sueño tonto que hayamos tenido, pero que tiene esa magia intrínseca que todos los sueños nos producen en nuestra psique. Todos los ángulos y diferentes escenas que se van hilando, que aparentemente no tienen sentido, son precisamente los que plasman esa huella mental que dejan ciertas situaciones o cuadros en nuestra mente.

Trata sobre cómo Björk, se encamina a liberar a su amado que se haya dormido (o en un estado de hibernación) en un museo de arte al que han transportado previamente. Empieza con Björk conduciendo un gran camión que se avería porque un vagabundo maloliente se encuentra en su interior. Luego Björk necesita repostar el camión con combustible, pero le empieza a doler una muela, y acude al dentista. Allí, sorpresivamente le atiende un dentista gorila, que encuentra un diamante en su boca. Luego Björk y el gorila pelean por el diamante y Björk logra hacerse con él y escapa.

“Es probablemente la forma más realista de expresar la situación en la que me encuentro. Todas esas personas que intentan llevarse algo mio, y el gorila que encuentra el diamante que yo desconocía que poseía, y que al final me roba. “Army of me” trata de como he aprendido a defenderme a mi misma. Tengo que levantarme y luchar con el gorila. Una vez recupero el diamante y empiezo a correr con él, se vuelve más grande porque es mio. Pero si el gorila se hubiese quedado con él, se habría vuelto minúsculo. Eso es el surrealismo para mi.”

Finalmente, Björk usa ese diamante que ha crecido de tamaño para alimentar el motor del camión y poder llegar al museo de arte. Dentro, deja una bomba al lado de su amado y la deja detonando mientras escapa del museo. Cuando la bomba estalla dentro del museo, Björk se adentra en el edificio en ruinas y sin gente, para reunirse con su amado que ya se ha despertado.

Los efectos están muy conseguidos para dotar al vídeo de elementos y situaciones tan surrealistas, como el considerable tamaño del camión, la forma de bajarse volando del mismo, el ángulo donde vemos cómo a Björk le duele la muela, o cómo su cuerpo se alarga para llegar al motor que tiene una boca con dientes, un elemento muy presente en todo el vídeo.

También la forma que tiene de deslizarse en vez de andar al entrar en la consulta del dentista, el brillo en los ojos del gorila al tener el diamante, las múltiples Björks que pelean con el gorila, la forma en que va creciendo el diamante mientras Björk escapa con él entre sus brazos y terminando por ese final donde Björk abraza a su amado y las lágrimas se convierten en brillantes; todo un maratón de fantasía condensado en un videoclip de cuatro minutos y medio.

El vídeo fue editado en tres versiones debido a la censura que existe en varios países acerca de mostrar explosiones. En una versión, no aparece la escena donde Björk coloca la bomba, mostrando un mensaje que reza “To be continued…” (Continuará…). Otra versión, muestra a Björk plantando la bomba simplemente y la última versión, contiene las secuencias completas de la detonación y la reunión de Björk con su amor.

Como curiosidad, fijaos que en el museo, un hombre observa un cuadro que su vez, muestra una pintura de otro hombre contemplando un cuadro en un museo.

Esta es una de las canciones que más me gustan de este extinto grupo británico, incluida en su tercer disco “Before the rain”, publicado en 1997.

Esta canción, “Don’t you love me”, fue el sencillo con el que se lanzó el disco y la promoción del mismo, al que sucedieron el exitoso número uno “I wanna be the only one” (junto a BeBe Winans) y “Angel of mine”.

Corona fue uno de los exponentes más representativos del estilo Italo-dance en los 90, ya que obtuvo una buena racha de exitos de éxitos con los que reventó pistas de baile a mediados de los 90.

Aunque fue super conocida por su hit “Rythm of the night”, yo le perdí la pista con este tema en 1995, “I don’t wanna be a star”, que tiene unas reminiscencias de la música de baile de los 70.

Un gran temazo y One hit wonder de los 90, este “Baby I Love Your Way” del grupo Big Mountain, que fue publicado en 1994 dentro de su álbum “Unity”.

Big Mountain nació en San Diego, California, y lo componen: Tony Chin (guitarra), Billy Stoll (teclado), James McWhinney (vocal), Lance Rhodes (percusión, batería), Santa Davis (percusión), Lynn Copeland (bajo) y Quino (vocal). El guitarrista Tony Chin y el percusionista Santa Davis son jamaicanos, ambos habían tocado en la Peter Tosh band y la banda Soul Syndicate.

Este grupo tuvo dos nombres anteriores al final: Rainbow Warriors y Shiloh, quedándose en Big Mountain al final en 1991. El grupo se centraba en Quino como vocalista y guitarrista, Jerome Cruz como guitarrista, los percusionistas Gregory Blakney y Lance Rhodes, el teclista Manfred Reinke, y el bajista Lynn Copeland.

Bajo esta formación, grabaron el disco Wake Up con el sello Quality Label en 1992. En la primavera de 1993 lograron su primer éxito con “Touch My Light”, llegando al número 51 de las listas, y poco a poco fueron ganando promoción en las estaciones de radio como B-100 y Q-106 de San Diego como los nuevos UB40.

El éxito les llegó gracias a este tema que llegó al TOP 10, consiguió elevar el disco “Unity” al puesto 6 en Estados Unidos, puesto 2 en Reino Unido y convirtió este tema reggae en un hit mundial. Inclusive se realizó una versión en español para el mercado latino.

Aquí comenzaron las giras por Europa, Asia, América y varios festivales Reggae Sunsplash en Jamaica. De hecho, Big Mountain fue el primer grupo de reggae que tocó en China.

Después de este One Hit Wonder, le siguieron temas con menos fortuna, como “Sweet Sensual Love” (tema grabado en inglés y español), que sólo llegó al puesto 51 de las listas pop inglesas, o “Caribbean Blue”. Aunque no consiguieron superar su primer gran éxito, han seguido trabajando y grabando con numerosos artistas jamaicanos, incluidos Sly And Robbie y Handel Tucker.

Esta entrada se la dedico a Quaid, que le molan las pelirrojas tope mazo.

Belinda Carlisle lanzó su tercer disco en solitario a finales de 1989, “Runaway horses”, y el segundo single de este disco fue “La luna”, una bonita canción que sonó durante 1990 y funcionó muy bien Europa, aunque la fama de Belinda había decrecido en Estados Unidos por aquel entonces.

Esta canción fue producida por Rick Nowels y escrita también por Rick junto a Ellen Shipley.

El single llegó al puesto 10 en Suiza, 21 en Australia y 38 en Reino Unido, siendo también un TOP20 en Alemania.

Aun recuerdo cuando Belinda vino a España para promocionar esta canción, y estaba yo grabando la canción de la actuación de la tele por el “método loro” con mi casette. Vaya recuerdos… es que, por aquel entonces no había Emule y había sequía musical, uno tenía que ingeniárselas para conseguir música.

La canción va acompañada de un preciosa guitarra española y lleva una única parte en español, “La luna”, en toda la canción inglesa.

El vídeo, está inspirado en un estilo a “Las amistades peligrosas”, donde Belinda baila junto a otros franchutes de la época, y también sale en una habitación sola, en una cama tapada por sábanas, mientras el resplandor de la luna entra en la oscura sala. Para mi, son las mejores secuencias del vídeo, la Belinda sale que no veas de buenorra (ay oma qué rica XD).

Estas se intercalan con otra Belinda más contemporánea que es perseguida por las calles de lo que presumo que es París, de un misterioso hombre con gafas.

Izabella Dorota Scorupco nació en Bialystok, Polonia, el 4 de Junio de 1970, y se trasladó a la edad de 8 años a Suecia y por eso se ha declarado siempre tan sueca como polaca.

En Estocolmo, aprendió canto, interpretación, inglés y debutó a los 18 años en la película “Ingen kan älska som vi”.

Pronto empezó una carrera como modelo y un escueto devaneo en el terreno musical en el que publicó un disco en 1991, titulado “Iza”. De ese disco, se hizo notar en Europa con una versión del clásico “Shame, shame, shame” durante el año 1992.

En 1995 Izabella comenzó sus apariciones como actriz, siendo su primera película importante, el papel de “Natalya Fyodorovna Simonova” en “GoldenEye”. Otros trabajos cinematográficos fueron “Límite vertical”, “El imperio del fuego”, “El exorcista: el comienzo”, “Con sangre y fuego” o “Cougar Club”.

El vídeo de la canción fue dirigido por Herb Ritts y transcurre en un entorno desértico.

Double You fue un grupo Eurodance que empezó su andadura en 1985, cuando el cantante William Naraine (británico de madre italiana y padre indio, nació el 29 de Diciembre de 1965), empezó a producir y escribir demos de canciones junto a sus amigos Franco Amato (músico nacido en La Spezia el 21 de Agosto de 1963) y Andrea de Antoni (discjockey nacido en La Spezia el 9 de octubre de 1966).

En 1992 saltaron a la fama en el ambiente dance con la canción “Please don’t go”, de la que se vendieron 3 millones de copias y fue la canción dance más bailada del año. La canción es una versión del original cantado por “KC and the Sunshine Band”.

En 1991, los chicos conocieron al productor Roberto Zanetti, grabaron el tema “Please don’t go” en Diciembre de ese año y en Enero de 1992 se publicó, convirtiéndose pronto en un éxito. Así que empezaron una gira por toda Europa, que incluyó muchas apariciones en programas de televisión.

En Junio de 1992, durante su gira europea, grabaron el tema “We all need love“, que también confirmó su éxito (por ejemplo fue número 2 en Israel).

Luego lanzaron el disco que llevaba el nombre de este segundo single, “We all need love”, y que incluyó el tercer single titulado “Who’s Fooling Who” y que fue publicado en Septiembre de 1992.

En las navidades de 1992, publicaron el single navideño “Why (Let’s Make It Christmas)”, que cantaron junto al cantante y compositor de la canción original de “Please don’t go”, Harry Casey (”KC”).

Un cuarto single, “Looking At My Girl”, fue publicado y tuvo mucho éxito en sudamérica, especialmente en Brasil, donde estuvo en las listas de éxitos durante tres meses. Las otras canciones del álbum eran: “Drive”, “Walking On The Chinese Wall”, “You Are My World”, “Going Back”, “With Or Without You”.

A finales de 1993, empezaron a grabar su segundo álbum, “The blue album”, y como primer single publicaron “Missing You“, que fue un éxito en Alemania, Holanda, Italia y latinoamérica.

El segundo single, “Part Time Lover“, fue un gran éxito en Europa, especialmente en Francia y Alemania, logrando también ser número 1 en Israel.

El tercer single, “Heart of Glass“, fue un gran éxito en España y el Este de Europa.

El cuarto single, “Run to Me“, consiguió triunfar en Holanda, España y Estados Unidos. De esta forma, pudieron comenzar una gira estadounidense en 1995.

Con este álbum, Double You consiguió un gran éxito en Brasil, donde vendió más de 300.000 copias en poco tiempo, consiguiendo el disco de platino y confirmando su éxito en ese país, actuando en los escenarios más importantes, como el Metropolitan de Rio de Janeiro o el Olympia de Sao Paulo.

En poco menos de tres meses, el grupo había dado 64 conciertos, estableciendo un récord para un grupo de música de baile al actuar ante más de 350.000 personas.

En 1995 se publicó el single “Dancing With An Angel“, que contó con la voz de la cantante Sandra Chambers y se convirtió en el éxito del verano. En Italia el éxito fue enorme, y emprendieron un tour de ocho meses en dicho país. También fue un gran éxito en otros países, como Suiza, Australia, Israel y latinoamérica.

Luego le precedió el single, “Because I’m Loving You“, que fue publicado bajo diferentes versiones, y se convirtió un éxito en España, Italia, Israel o Brasil, así como en todas las radios europeas.

A principios de 1996, Andrea de Antoni dejó el grupo para emprender una carrera en solitario. A partir de este momento, el grupo se dedico al mercado brasileño, donde tenía una gran demanda, dedicando incluso su álbum “Forever” a ellos.

Después de dos años de descanso, el grupo sacó otro álbum en la primavera de 1997, con el single “Somebody” como primer plato.

En 1999 publicaron el single “Desperado” y “Do you wanna be funky”

En el nuevo milenio, la carrera de “Double you” ha sido más errática y con menor éxito, publicando algunos remixes de sus éxitos de los 90 y algún disco de grandes éxitos. También un remix de la canción “Everything i do” de Bryan Adams.

Otro éxito de los 90, a cargo de Real McCoy, un grupo alemán de Eurodance que originalmente se llamaba M.C. Sar & The Real McCoy.

Real McCoy fue la creación del rapero y productor alemán Olaf “O-Jay” Jeglitza. Después de haber publicado una edición limitada de singles de 12″ en Alemania bajo el nombre de “The Alliance”, con sus amigos Frank “Quickmix” Hassas y Jay Wind, su mayor éxito vino en Diciembre de 1989 cuando una versión del éxito de Technotronic “Pump Up The Jam”, llegó al puesto 16 de las listas de sencillos en Alemania.

Llegados a este punto, editaron el segundo single, “It’s On You”, añadiéndose al grupo la cantante Patsy Petersen y el rapero Shampro. O-Jay no se sentía a gusto siendo el líder del grupo, por lo que Shampro empezó a mimizar los raps de O-Jay. Cuando el single se publicó en 1990, llegó al puesto 11 en la lista alemana, y editaron un álbum de nombre “On The Move”.

Posteriormente, las cosas estuvieron muy calmadas para el grupo, hasta que David Brunner, director de Discos Hansa, quedó impresionado con la canción que O-Jay había escrito titulada “Another Night”, pero estaba insatisfecho con la voz de Patsy. Por lo que escogió otra cantante para regrabar la canción de nuevo, eligiendo a Karin Kasar y dejando el trabajo de producción en manos de The Berman Brothers.

Convencido de que tenía un éxito entre manos, Brunner persuadió a O-Jay para que él mismo publicara la nueva versión de “Another Night” con Patsy (mimizando la voz de Karin) y O-Jay to reemplazando a Shampro como el nuevo “M.C. Sar & The Real McCoy”.

En 1993 esta canción llegó al número 18 de la lista alemana, seguida del álbum “Space Invaders”. Entonces Clive Davis de Arista Records en Estados Unidos mostró algo de interés por el grupo, ya que su proyecto con Ace of base había funcionado muy bien terreno yanki, y quería hacer el mismo trabajo con la remozada banda de Real McCoy.

Se hizo un nuevo vídeo, se añadió una nueva cantante, Vanessa Mason, con lo que se formó un trío, y el single llegó al puesto 3 de la lista Billboard 100 a finales de 1994. Se publicó de nuevo en Reino Unido, donde sólo había llegado al puesto 61 el año anterior, llegado en esta nueva oportunidad al puesto 2 en tan solo tres semanas y vendiendo más de 312.000 copias.

Yo de todas formas, juraría que vi este single en la MTV norteamericana en el puesto número 1 durante el verano de 1995, y supongo que hablaban de ventas.

Posteriormente el grupo tuvo algunos otros éxitos, aunque eso lo dejo para otro momento; en esta parte he repasado los principios de la banda hasta lograr su primer y mayor éxito.

Helen Folasade Adu, más conocida por todos como Sade Adu, es una cantante que siempre se ha distinguido por sus canciones y baladas melódicas y tranquilas, mezclando siempre estilos como el jazz y el pop para conseguir unos ambientes íntimos.

De padre nigeriano y madre inglesa, Sade formó el grupo “Sade” en 1982 junto a Paul Spencer Denman, Stuart Mathewman y Paul Anthony Cook. En 1983 se sumó Andrew Hale a los componentes, y un año después, Paul Anthony dejó el grupo.

Esta canción corresponde al cuarto disco del grupo, “Love deluxe”, publicado el 11 de Noviembre de 1992 (en Estados Unidos 21 de Noviembre). En Reino Unido alcanzó el puesto décimo, mientras que en Estados Unidos llegó al tercero.

De este álbum se extrajo como primer single la canción “Ordinary Love”, que consiguió un grammy a la “Mejor actuación R&B”, llegando al puesto 14 de las listas británicas y al 9 en las listas R&B norteamericanas.

El vídeo narra la típica leyenda de la sirena que se enamora de un hombre humano y sale a la tierra en busca de él, a costa de perder las piernas, su naturaleza marina como sirena y poner en peligro su salud por no encontrarse en un medio acuático. De algún modo, refleja muy bien el espíritu de la letra, que habla sobre un “amor no corriente”.

Una estupenda recreación del ambiente oceánico y una formidable balada.

En Agosto de 1990, Mariah Carey empezó su carrera musical de manera oficial y lo hizo con esta estupenda balada que la catapultó a la fama mundial y le proporcionó su primer número 1 de la interminable lista de éxitos que vendrían posteriormente.

Mariah Carey ha batido numerosos récords a lo largo de su carrera, tanto de números 1, posiciones en lista privilegiadas y curiosas, disco navideño y de MTV Unplugged femenino más vendido, registros de voz, canción más radiada en una semana, ventas en los 90 o canción en el número 1 del Billboard durante más semanas.

Este single entró dentro de su primer disco homónimo “Mariah Carey”, el segundo más vendido de su discografía, con 18 millones de copias distribuidas mundialmente. En Estados Unidos, Reino Unido, Canadá y Brasil logró ser número 1.

El single “Vision of love” estuvo durante cuatro semanas en el número 1 de las listas estadounidenses y logró el puesto 9 en las listas británicas. La Bouche fue un dúo creado por Frank Farian en Alemania por el año 1994, y formado por Melanie Thornton y Lane McCray.

Su primer álbum, titulado “Sweet Dreams”, fue Platino cinco veces y Oro nueve veces en ventas mundiales, unos 8.2 millones de copias.

El primer single “Le click: tonight is the night” llegó al puesto 68 del la lista Billboard Hot 100, el 22 en la lista Hot Dance Club/Play Chart y el 2 en la Euro Hot 100.

El siguiente single, “Be my lover“, fue un éxito rotundo, siendo TOP 10 en más de 40 países, número 1 en Alemania y número 6 de la lista Billboard estadounidense durante el verano de 1995. Incluso llegó a ganar el premio ASCAP a la “Canción más radiada en América”. Este single vendió 6 millones de copias en todo el mundo. (Versión americana del vídeo)

El tercer single, “Sweet Dreams”, llegó al puesto 13 de la lista Billboard, al 3 en la lista Dance Chart estadounidense, y fue número 1 en Alemania y la lista Euro Hot 100. (Vídeo versión americana)

El último single era una versión de la canción de Hamilton, “Fallin’ in Love“, que llegó al puesto 3 en la lista Hot Dance Club/Play Chart, y el 4 en la lista Euro Hot 100.

Estos cuatro singles se consideran clásicos de la música Eurodance de los 90. Otro single a destacar fue “I love to love”

Posteriormente, sólo sacaron otro álbum en 1998 llamado “S.O.S“, también conocido como “A moment of love”, del que se puede destacar él éxito europeo “You Won’t Forget Me“.

Cuando Melanie Thornton dejó el grupo para emprender una carrera en solitario, fue reemplazada por Natascha Wright, siendo lanzado el single “All i want” en Abril del 2000. Como las ventas fueron deplorables, Farian decidió dar por terminada la vida del grupo.

Mientras, Melanie por solitario tuvo algo de popularidad gracias a los singles “Love how you love me” y “Wonderful Dream (Holidays are coming)”, que se usó para unos anuncios navideños de Coca-cola.

Mientras promocionaba su álbum “Ready to fly”, que fue editado en Abril del 2001, Melanie murió al estrellarse el avión que la llevaba a Zurich el 24 de Noviembre del 2001. El disco de Melanie se vendió bien antes y después de su muerte.

En Abril del 2000, Farian (el productor de La Bouche) compiló canciones del álbum debut de Melanie con algunas de los dos discos de La Bouche y creó un disco de éxitos llamado “The best of La Bouche (feat. Melanie Thornton)”.

En Noviembre del 2002, para conmemorar el aniversario de la muerte de Melanie, Farian preparó un single de tributo titulado “In your life“. Esta canción era una pista no publicada del disco debut de Melanie en solitario.

La Bouche continuó haciendo tours, pero no han habido planes de un tercer álbum o más singles desde entonces.

Este fue mundialmente el tercer single del disco “Aquarium” de Aqua (séptimo single realmente si contamos los singles lanzados en Dinamarca) en Mayo de 1998.

Llegó a ser número 1 en las listas británicas durante una semana, y es una de las composiones más tranquilas y armoniosas del grupo, que suelen tener un estilo parecido.

En el vídeo, podemos ver imágenes de la película “Dos vidas en un instante” (Sliding doors), de Gwyneth Paltrow, intercaladas con secuencias del grupo Aqua vagando por un metro.

El rodaje de estas escenas de metro fue realizado en la abandonada plataforma 5 de Holborn, Londres.

No Mercy era un grupo fundado en 1995 en Miami por los hermanos Ariel y Gabriel Hernández (nacidos en Miami el 3 de Junio de 1971) acompañados por Marty Cintron (nacido en Nueva York el 24 de Septiembre de 1971).

Con su disco “Promise” de 1996, consiguieron un notable éxito, del cual salieron estos temas destacados: Where do you go (puesto 5) y Please Don’t Go (puesto 21).

Con su siguiente disco de 1998, “More than a feeling”, terminaron su trayectoria musical siendo notables estos temas: Baby come back y Hello how are you.

En el 2002 iban a sacar un tercer disco, pero el proyecto no cuajó y los temas fueron destinados al disco de otro cantante, Daniel Lopez. En este año ha salido un disco de grandes éxitos de esta banda.

Una canción estupenda de un grupo extinto y comercial que me encantaba. Los Vengaboys eran repetitivos, insustanciales y ridículos, pero aun así me gustaban mucho.

Por cierto, la versión del vídeo (la del single supongo) no es la misma del disco, lo que me hace pensar que lo que se emitió por las radios y se publicitó, fue alguna remezcla del single especial.
