Nickolas Ashford, nacido el 4 de Mayo de 1942 en Fairfield y Valerie Simpson, nacida el 26 de Agosto de 1946, tenían dos carreras por separado como letristas y cantantes, pero se unieron en 1964 y consiguieron su primer éxito como letristas con la canción “Let’s go get stoned” de Ray Charles en 1966.

Después de un periodo en Scepter Records, se cambiaron a la Motown, donde escribieron éxitos para el duo entre Marvin Gaye y Tammi Terrell (”Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing”, “You’re All I Need to Get By”). Cuando Diana Ross dejó las Supremas (las de Móstoles no) para emprender una carrera en solitario, Ashford y Simpson le escribieron la canción “Reach Out and Touch Somebody’s Hand.”

Su propia carrera como cantantes empezó en 1973 con los discos “Keep It Comin’” en la Motown y “Gimme Something Real” en la Warner Bros. Su primer éxito les sobrevino en 1977 con el disco de oro “Send It”, que contiene el TOP 10 de las listas de R&B, “Don’t Cost You Nothing.”

Su segundo disco también fue disco de oro, “Is It Still Good to Ya”, que contiene el éxito de R&B, “It Seems to Hang On”, que fue número dos en 1978.

Su tercer disco (tambien de oro), “Stay free”, contenía “Found a Cure”, que también fue otro tema R&B que consiguió posicionarse en el TOP 40 de la lista de éxitos.

En 1980 publicaron “A Musical Affair”, que contenía el éxito “Love Don’t Make It Right”, aunque no tuvieron tanta repercusión como sus trabajos anteriores.

Mientras tanto Ashford y Simpson continuaban trabajando para otros artistas, logrando éxitos con Ross, Chaka Khan (”I’m Every Woman”) y Gladys Knight.

Su propia carrera musical tuvo un resurgimiento con el mayor éxito de su carrera en 1984 gracias a la canción “Solid”, que fue número 12 en las listas de ventas y número 1 de la lista R&B.

A este single le siguieron “Outta the World” y “Babies.”

Durante los 80 y los 90, Ashford y Simpson continuaron su carrera esporadicamente grabando y haciendo giras.
